Short answer
Installing Minecraft Server PluginsDrop the plugin .jar into the /plugins folder on the server and restart — it loads on the next start. This only works with Paper, Spigot or Bukkit as the server software; Vanilla, Forge and Fabric cannot load plugins.
Plugins — the heart of every Minecraft server
A vanilla Minecraft server is good, but with plugins it becomes great. Plugins extend your server with features like land protection, teleportation, economy systems, mini-games and much more.
In this guide we'll show you how to install plugins on your Minecraft server — whether Spigot, Paper or Bukkit.
Important: Plugins only work with Spigot, Paper or Bukkit — not with Vanilla or Forge/Fabric (those are mods, not plugins). At Agrar Chaoten you can choose the server software in the web interface.
Spigot vs. Paper — which server software?
Before you install plugins, your server needs to run the right software:
| Software | Plugin support | Performance | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | ✓ Full | Very good | ★ Recommended |
| Spigot | ✓ Full | Good | Alternative |
| Bukkit | ✓ Full | OK | Outdated |
| Vanilla | ✗ No | Standard | Only without plugins |
| Forge/Fabric | ✗ No (mods) | Varies | For mods |
Our recommendation: Paper. Paper is a fork of Spigot with better performance, bug fixes and additional configuration options. All Spigot/Bukkit plugins also work on Paper.
Step 1: Finding plugins
The best sources for Minecraft plugins:
- SpigotMC.org — The biggest plugin platform with over 100,000 plugins
- Hangar (PaperMC) — Official plugin platform for Paper
- Modrinth — Modern platform with quality plugins
- Bukkit.org — Older platform, lots of proven plugins
Beware of shady sources! Only download plugins from the official platforms listed above. Plugins from random websites can contain malware.
Step 2: Installing plugins
Download the plugin
Download the plugin's .jar file from the official source. Watch out for the correct Minecraft version — a plugin for 1.20 won't necessarily work on 1.21.
Connect via FTP
Open FileZilla or another FTP client and connect to your server.
Upload the plugin
Navigate to the /plugins/ folder on your server and upload the .jar file there:
Restart the server
Restart the server. The plugins are loaded on startup — check the console for error messages.
Configure the plugin
After the first start, every plugin automatically creates a configuration folder under /plugins/PluginName/. That's where you'll find the config.yml for customization.
The best starter plugins
For a well-functioning Minecraft server we recommend this plugin combination:
Protection & security
- WorldGuard + WorldEdit — Region protection, griefing protection, defining build zones
- CoreProtect — Block logging, rollback after griefing
- LuckPerms — Permission system, ranks, groups
Essentials & convenience
- EssentialsX — Basic commands: /home, /spawn, /tpa, /warp, kits
- Vault — Economy API (required by many plugins)
- ChestShop — Player shops using signs
Gameplay
- mcMMO — RPG leveling system for mining, farming, combat
- Jobs Reborn — Earn money through activities
- GriefPrevention — Claim land with the golden shovel
Common problems and solutions
Plugin won't load
- Is the Minecraft version compatible? Check the plugin page
- Are you using Paper/Spigot? Plugins don't work on Vanilla
- Does the plugin have dependencies? Some plugins need other plugins (e.g. WorldGuard needs WorldEdit)
Server won't start after installing a plugin
Remove the most recently added plugin via FTP and restart. Check the console logs — they tell you exactly which plugin caused the error.
Command doesn't work
Usually a permission problem. Check whether you have the right permission. With LuckPerms you can grant permissions via command: /lp user SPIELER permission set PERMISSION
Tips for a stable plugin setup
Less is more. Only install plugins you really need. 10 good plugins are better than 50 mediocre ones.
Test one at a time. Install plugins one after another, not all at once. That way you find problems faster.
Keep plugins up to date. Outdated plugins can have security holes and cause compatibility problems.
Backup before updates. Before updating plugins or the server, create a full backup.
