Short answer
How many mods can I install on my FS25 server?Technically there is no hard limit, but for good performance we recommend a maximum of 30-50 mods. Map mods and script mods use more resources.
Overview: mods in Farming Simulator 25
Mods belong to Farming Simulator 25 like the tractor belongs on the field. They extend the game with new machines, maps, scripts and gameplay features — and best of all: you can use mods on a dedicated server, too.
In this guide we'll show you step by step how to install mods on your FS25 server. We cover both methods — ModHub and FTP upload — and explain what to watch out for with crossplay.
What you need: An FS25 dedicated server with access to the web interface and optionally an FTP client like FileZilla for external mods.
ModHub mods vs. external mods — the difference
GIANTS Software offers vetted mods through the official ModHub, which can be installed directly in-game or via the server web interface. These mods go through a quality check and are guaranteed to be compatible.
Besides those, there are external mods from third-party sites (e.g. Modhoster, LS-Modcompany) that are uploaded to the server via FTP. These aren't vetted by GIANTS and can lead to problems.
| Property | ModHub mods | External mods |
|---|---|---|
| Crossplay-compatible | ✓ Yes | ✗ No (PC only) |
| Quality-checked | ✓ By GIANTS | ⚠ Not checked |
| Installation | Via web interface (1 click) | Via FTP upload |
| Auto-download | ✓ Players download automatically | ✗ Manually for everyone |
Our recommendation: Whenever possible, use ModHub mods. They're more stable, work with crossplay and are distributed to all players automatically.
Method 1: installing ModHub mods (recommended)
The easiest method — ModHub mods can be activated directly through your server's web interface.
Open the web interface
Log into your FS25 server's web interface. You get the URL and login details from your server provider.
Navigate to the mods section
In the web interface you'll find the "Mods" or "Extensions" tab. There you'll see all available ModHub mods, sorted by category.
Activate the mods
Search for the mod you want and activate it with one click. Take care not to install too many mods at once — go step by step.
Restart the server
After activating, you have to restart the server once. You'll find a "Restart" button in the web interface for that. Takes 1-2 minutes.
Done — test the mod
Connect to the server and check the active mods. Your fellow players receive ModHub mods automatically when they join.
Method 2: uploading external mods via FTP
For mods that aren't available on the ModHub, you need FTP access. Keep in mind: external mods don't work with crossplay.
Set up an FTP client
Download FileZilla. Enter the FTP login details you get from your server provider (server, username, password and port – exactly as shown in your customer area; the port is not always 21).
Find the mods folder
Navigate to the mods folder: /FarmingSimulator2025/mods/
Upload the mod files
Drag & drop the downloaded ZIP files into the mods folder.
Important: do NOT unpack the ZIP files! Upload the mods as ZIP files. The FS25 server unpacks and loads the mods automatically on startup.
Restart the server & activate
Restart the server. The uploaded mods should now appear in the mod list in the web interface. Activate them there.
Inform your fellow players
With external mods, all players need the same mods installed locally.
Mods and crossplay — what works?
Crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S fundamentally works with mods — but only with ModHub mods. External mods via FTP only work in PC-only mode, since console players can't install external mods.
Practical tip: For mixed groups (PC + console), use ModHub mods for your main server. For external mods you can set up a second PC-only server.
Common problems and solutions
Server won't start after installing mods
Almost always an incompatible mod. Check the server log in the web interface, remove the most recently added mods and restart. Add mods back one at a time to find the offender.
Mods don't show up
- Is the file really a .zip file? (.rar and .7z don't work)
- Is the file in the right folder?
- Did you restart the server?
Performance problems with lots of mods
- Stick to 30-50 mods for good performance
- Map mods are especially resource-hungry — a maximum of one additional map
- Script mods (Courseplay, AutoDrive) load the CPU more than vehicle mods
Tips for stable mod setups
Test mods in single-player first. That way you spot errors without taking the server down for everyone.
Make regular backups. Before installing new mods, create a backup of your savegame.
Keep a mod list. Note down which mods are installed in which version.
Coordinate updates. Agree within the group before mods or the game get updated.
