Short answer

Installing WordPress in Plesk

Log in to Plesk, open "WordPress" in the left menu and click "Install". Leave the installation path empty, enter site title, admin user, password and e-mail, install. After about a minute your site is at https://your-domain.com and the admin area at /wp-admin. Plesk creates the database and the HTTPS certificate itself.

What you need

WordPress runs on any web hosting with PHP and MySQL – in Plesk you install it with one click, without uploading a single file by hand. Plesk creates the database, copies WordPress into the right folder, writes the configuration and fetches the HTTPS certificate. You only enter a title, a username and a password.

What you needWhere to find it
A web hosting plan with PleskFor example the web hosting from Agrar Chaoten – Plesk, PHP 8.3 and MySQL are included
Your Plesk loginIn your customer area under your web hosting, block “Plesk (management)”
A domain that points to the serverTwo A records at your domain provider – see the A record guide
About ten minutesThe installation itself takes under a minute

The domain can come later. Plesk installs WordPress even if the domain does not point to the server yet. You can view the site through the preview in Plesk. As soon as the A records take effect, it is reachable under your domain.

Log in to Plesk

1

Open your credentials

In your customer area under your web hosting you find the block “Plesk (management)” with address, username and password. Reveal the password with one click.

2

Open Plesk

Open the Plesk address in your browser and log in with username and password. On first login Plesk asks for language and time zone – you can change both at any time.

3

Go to your website

After logging in you land on Websites & Domains. Your domain is listed there with all tools: files, databases, certificates, cron jobs – and WordPress.

Install WordPress

Plesk ships with the WordPress Toolkit. It installs WordPress, keeps it up to date and backs it up. Field names can differ slightly between Plesk versions; the order is always the same.

1

Open WordPress

Click WordPress in the left menu, then Install. Alternatively use the “Install WordPress” tile on your domain’s page.

2

Leave the installation path empty

Plesk suggests your domain. Leave the path after it empty so WordPress runs directly at https://your-domain.com and not under /wordpress. Technically it lands in the httpdocs folder.

3

Title, language, login

Enter a site title (you can change it later in WordPress), pick the language and create an administrator: username, a long password, your e-mail address. This is your login for /wp-admin. Do not use “admin” as the username.

4

Database and updates

Plesk creates the database automatically; nothing to enter. For the update settings we recommend: minor WordPress updates automatic, plugins and themes automatic as well. The site then stays secure without your attention.

5

Install

Click Install. After about a minute the site appears in Plesk’s WordPress overview with the buttons “Log in” and “Open”.

Forgot the password? The “Log in” button in the WordPress Toolkit takes you into the admin area without a password at any time, and you can set a new one there.

The first five minutes in WordPress

The admin area is at https://your-domain.com/wp-admin. Five things are worth doing right away:

SettingWhereWhy
Permalinks set to “Post name”Settings → PermalinksReadable addresses like /about instead of ?p=12
Delete the sample post and sample pagePosts, PagesNobody should find “Hello world”
Allow search enginesSettings → ReadingThe box “Discourage search engines” must be unticked
Pick a themeAppearance → ThemesA light theme is enough; heavy themes slow the site down
Create legal pagesPages → Add newIn Germany an imprint and privacy policy are mandatory, even for club and farm sites

Check HTTPS

As soon as your domain points to the server, Plesk fetches a free Let’s Encrypt certificate and renews it on its own. You can check it in Plesk under Websites & Domains → SSL/TLS Certificates. If a valid certificate is listed, the browser shows the padlock.

Does WordPress still show http:// addresses? Then change “WordPress Address” and “Site Address” under Settings → General to https://your-domain.com. Otherwise the site loads images and scripts unencrypted and the browser warns.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install WordPress in Plesk?
Log in to Plesk, open "WordPress" in the menu, click "Install", leave the installation path empty, enter title and admin login and install. Plesk creates the database and the certificate itself; after about a minute the site is running.
Do I need a database for WordPress?
Yes, but you do not have to create it. The WordPress Toolkit in Plesk creates the MySQL database and user automatically and writes the credentials into wp-config.php.
Where do I reach the WordPress admin area?
At https://your-domain.com/wp-admin with the administrator login you created during installation. If you forgot the password, the "Log in" button in the WordPress Toolkit in Plesk still gets you in.
Why does my domain show a Plesk default page instead of WordPress?
Because the domain does not point to the web hosting server yet, or the browser cached the old page. Check the two A records and reload the page in a private window.
Does my WordPress site get HTTPS automatically?
Yes. As soon as the domain points to the server, Plesk fetches a free Let's Encrypt certificate and renews it automatically. In WordPress, "WordPress Address" and "Site Address" should start with https://.
Which web hosting do I need for WordPress?
One with PHP 8 or newer, a MySQL database, HTTPS and Plesk with the WordPress Toolkit. Agrar Chaoten web hosting from EUR 3.99 per month includes all of it, hosted in Germany, cancel monthly.
