Short answer
What does 'Error: Running LUA method' mean in FS25?A script error from a mod. The function (e.g. update or draw) is just the symptom — the culprit appears in the 'LUA call stack' as a mod folder name in the path (e.g. FS25_ExampleMod).
LUA errors in FS25 — overview
A LUA error is a script error that almost always comes from a mod — not from the base game. LUA is the programming language FS25 mods use to write their logic. If a script runs into an error, the server writes it to the log and stops the affected function. Sometimes the server crashes; often it keeps running but floods the log while individual mod features stop working.
The good news: The culprit is almost always right there in the error. The "LUA call stack" tells you which mod is triggering the problem — you just need to know where to look.
What a LUA error looks like in the log
A typical entry in the server log looks like this:
Two things matter:
- "Error: Running LUA method ..." — the function that blows up (e.g.
update, draw, mouseEvent). That's just the symptom. - The path in the "LUA call stack" — this contains the mod folder name (in the example
FS25_BeispielMod). That's your culprit.
Finding the mod causing the error
Open the log
Open the server log (in the web interface or the log.txt via FTP). Use search (Ctrl+F) and look for Error or LUA call stack.
Read the mod name from the path
The call stack contains a path with /mods/FS25_XXXX/.... The FS25_XXXX part is the mod throwing the error.
Check the frequency
Does the same error show up hundreds of times? Then it's running every frame — a clear sign of a broken or outdated mod that urgently needs to be removed or updated.
How to fix the error
Update the mod
Most common cause: the mod is outdated and doesn't match the current FS25 version. Download the latest version from the ModHub or from the creator's original source.
Remove or replace the mod
If there's no update, remove the mod from the mods folder via FTP and restart. For many popular mods (e.g. Courseplay, AutoDrive) there are well-maintained, up-to-date alternatives.
Cross-check with an empty mods folder
If the error disappears without mods, it's definitely caused by a mod. Then add the mods back step by step (see the mod conflict guide) until the error returns.
Never dump everything in blindly: Test new mods one at a time before they go on the live server — no matter how well-known the creator is. Wrongly named or repackaged "stolen" mods are a common source of errors.
Common error messages and what they mean
- Error: Running LUA method 'update'/'draw': Script error in a mod — read the culprit from the call stack.
- Warning: ... is not defined / nil value: The mod expects something that's missing (often after a game update).
- Error: Can't load resource / file not found: A mod file is missing or corrupted — re-upload the mod.
- Error running specialization: Two mods are clashing or a mod is incompatible with the game version.
Warning vs. Error: Plain Warning lines are often harmless and don't affect the game. Only Error entries — especially with a "LUA call stack" — point to real problems.
If nothing helps
If the error persists despite up-to-date mods, check: is the correct FS25 version running on the server? After a game update, several mods often need updating at the same time. Back up your savegame via FTP first — if a mod has left objects in your save, removing it can delete them.
