Short answer

How do I become admin on my TeamSpeak server?

On first start the server generates a privilege key (admin token). Redeem it in the client under Permissions > Use Privilege Key and you'll receive the Server Admin group.

TeamSpeak server — overview

TeamSpeak has been the classic choice for stable, low-latency voice communication in gaming for years. Your own TeamSpeak server gives you full control: permanent channels, your own permission system and no time limits. In this guide you'll set up your server, secure your admin rights and create a clean channel structure.

What you need: A TeamSpeak server (e.g. at Agrar Chaoten) and the free TeamSpeak client on PC or smartphone. That's all you need to get started.

Setting up the server

1

Order & start the server

After ordering, your server runs immediately. In the web interface you'll see the IP address and port (default voice port: 9987). Write both down for your first login.

2

Secure the privilege key

On first start, the server generates a privilege key (admin token). You'll find it in the web interface or in the server log. This key makes you the server admin — keep it safe, it only works once.

3

Connect with the client

Open the TeamSpeak client, click "Connect", enter IP:Port and a nickname. If the port is the default 9987, the IP alone is usually enough.

Unlocking admin rights

After connecting for the first time, you're initially a normal user. Here's how to become admin:

1

Redeem the privilege key

In the client, click Permissions → Use Privilege Key, paste the token and confirm. You immediately receive the Server Admin group.

The client often asks for the token automatically right after the first connection. If not, you'll always find the option under the "Permissions" menu.

Channels & permission system

Now build your structure:

  • Create channels: Right-click in the channel list → "Create Channel". Set up e.g. a lobby, gaming rooms and an AFK channel.
  • Server groups: Assign groups like "Admin", "Moderator", "Member". Through the group you control who's allowed to create channels, kick or ban.
  • Default channel & talk power: With talk power you can e.g. build a presentation channel where only authorized people are allowed to speak.

Multiple admins: You can assign the admin group directly to other people (right-click on the user → server group) or generate additional privilege keys in the web interface.

Connecting from your smartphone

The TeamSpeak app for iOS and Android connects the same way: enter IP and port, choose a nickname, done. That way you stay in the voice channel on the go — handy for groups who aren't always at their PC.

Tips for stable operation

Server password: Set a server password for private communities — that keeps strangers out.

Be sparing with permissions: Don't give normal members kick/ban rights. A well-thought-out group system saves you a lot of trouble later.

Your own domain: Instead of the IP, you can often use a memorable address — that makes sharing with friends easier.
