# Why Is My FS25 Server Lagging?

> Your FS25 server is lagging? The 5 most common causes and how to fix them — from too many mods to the wrong CPU.

**Short answer:** Most common cause: too many AI vehicles (AutoDrive, Courseplay) or faulty mods. Check the server log for ERROR entries.

## The most common causes of FS25 server lag

Your FS25 server is lagging? That's one of the most frustrating problems in multiplayer. Before you switch providers or give up, it's worth pinning down the exact cause — because often the problem isn't the provider at all, but the configuration.

**Important:** FS25 server lag and network lag are two different problems. This guide covers server-side lag (tick rate issues). Network lag (high ping) has different causes.

## Cause 1: Too many or faulty mods

This is by far the most common cause of FS25 server lag. Mods put load on the server CPU — especially mods that run calculations on a regular basis.

**Rule of thumb:** Up to 30 ModHub mods run without issues on good hardware. Beyond 50+ mods, things can get tight on weak hardware. External FTP mods are often less well optimized than ModHub mods.

### Problematic mod types:

- **AutoDrive + Courseplay:** Lots of AI-controlled vehicles running at once put heavy load on the server
- **Large map mods:** Maps with lots of details and triggers can slow down the tick
- **Badly coded mods:** Script errors in the log are a dead giveaway
- **Production mods:** Many production chains running at once increase server load

**1. Test your mods**

Disable all mods and start the server. If the lag is gone, re-enable mods step by step until you find the culprit.

**2. Check the server log**

In the web interface under "Logs" — script errors (ERROR) and warnings point to problematic mods.

## Cause 2: Too many active AI vehicles

Every AI-controlled vehicle (AutoDrive, Courseplay, workers) needs CPU time on the server. On weak hardware or with lots of workers running at once, lag is the result.

- A maximum of 10–15 simultaneous workers/AI vehicles on typical servers
- Don't let your AutoDrive network spiral completely out of control
- Don't have 10 vehicles harvesting + hauling + processing all at the same time

## Cause 3: Weak server hardware

Like almost all game servers, FS25 runs predominantly on a single CPU core (single-threaded). What matters is **single-core performance** — not the number of cores.

**Hardware warning:** Older server CPUs often have significantly weaker single-core performance. If your server runs on such hardware, that can be the main cause of lag with lots of mods or players.

### What good FS25 server hardware looks like:

- **High single-core clock speed** — at least 4.5 GHz boost
- **NVMe SSD** — fast loading times for savegames and mods
- **Enough RAM** — at least 4 GB for FS25 + mods

## Cause 4: Too many players at once

16 players at the same time combined with lots of active AI vehicles and mods can overwhelm even good hardware. What helps:

- Temporarily lower the player limit (e.g. to 8–10)
- Ask inactive players to log out when they're not playing
- Keep AI vehicles to a minimum in multiplayer

## Cause 5: Bloated savegame

After a lot of playtime, savegames can get very large and slow down loading as well as autosaving.

**1. Clean up your savegame**

Sell vehicles and objects you don't need. That reduces the savegame size and speeds up the autosave process.

**2. Remove dead triggers**

Some map mods leave trigger objects in the savegame even after the mod has been disabled. Remove these manually in the vehicles.xml or items.xml.

## Quick checklist: fixing FS25 lag

**Work through these points in order:**

- ☐ Check the server log for ERROR messages
- ☐ Reduce the number of active AI vehicles
- ☐ Disable mods and re-enable them step by step
- ☐ Check the savegame size (should be under 50 MB)
- ☐ Temporarily disable production chains
- ☐ Temporarily reduce the player count
- ☐ Check your provider's hardware (single-core performance is what counts)

If none of these steps help, the problem is most likely the server hardware. Ask your provider which CPU your server uses and send them the server log.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Why is my FS25 server lagging even though I only have a few players?**
A: Most common cause: too many AI vehicles (AutoDrive, Courseplay) or faulty mods. Check the server log for ERROR entries.

**Q: How many mods can my FS25 server handle without lag?**
A: It mainly depends on the single-core performance of the server CPU. On weak hardware, even 20 mods can cause lag.

**Q: What is the tick rate on an FS25 server?**
A: The tick rate (TPS) is how often the server computes the game world. Target: 60 TPS. Below 30 TPS lag becomes noticeable.
